Day 6 (September 21st) - Cozumel, Mexico (our favorite stop)
After getting off the ship, we took a boat from the island of Cozumel to the mainland of Mexico (about 30 minutes). The beach was gorgeous!
We arrized at Playa del Carmen and took a bus to our excursion that day
Adam and I had a good laugh as we passed this window walking to our bus...
After a 45-minute drive, we arrived to TULUM - the only Mayan ruins that exist on the coast (the rest are inland). Wikipedia's description: The ruins are situated on 39 ft tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayans, it
was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to
survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico.
Entering in to the walled city of Tulum...
(Adam is posing in front of a burial spot for a royalty member, they believe)
Their currency back in the day was the cocoa bean. I nibbled off a piece and sure enough, it tasted just like cocoa powder :)
It sits along the cliffs and is the most spectacular view to behold...
Can you spot Adam? :) He could have sat there all day taking it all in. But you can't beat that view: Mayan ruins, sweet looking cliffs, white sandy beach, and the beautiful caribbean ocean. Can you tell we loved it here.
Iguanas were everywhere and this fella let Adam get pretty close, he felt like he was a missionary in Honduras all over again...
They believed these ruins were painted blue and red, pretty crazy if you ask me, but you can still see some of the red on one of the ruins.
The main temple...
Leaving this ancient city...
We arrived back in Cozumel and had a little bit of time to shop around.
Souvenirs purchased from Cozumel: new bamboo sheets for our bed from Cariloha - supposedly the softest sheets on the planet. Actually the entire store was made from bamboo and it really was the softest material. Purchased myself a new shirt from there as well and we probably both would have gotten new track jackets but they were a little pricey. Check it out if you ever come across one. Apparently the owner is 'Mooowman', we both were like what? 'Mormon?' and the guy was like 'yeah! from Utah'. Sweet. Adam picked up some new Oakleys, we purchased some maracas for the kids, and a slingshot for Lincoln. Success.
