August got a little toasty here in Arizona so we escaped with our friends to their cabin in Pine Top (the week where the temps were above 110 everyday). We left Friday, August 10th and came back that Sunday, just in time for me to teach Sunday School, walking in with ten minutes to spare :)
The weekend getaway couldn't have been more perfect, seriously, and included a few firsts for Adam & I...seeing more of Arizona than just the I-10 headed to California and the I-17 headed to Utah/Idaho; crawdad fishing; frisbee golf; powertapping it up; and atving through the mountains! (enjoying this all in low 80 degree temps, much refreshing)
(Saturday, August 11th) Here we are headed to the crawfish pond to catch some yumminess for lunch...it was mostly a joke at this point but Adam was determined to eat his crawfish for lunch. No thank you!
Pierce-boy loving the ride...
Catching horned toads along the way. Kenedee has no fear when it comes to these kinds of things, she'll pounce on em and snatch em right up.
The key to crawdad fishing...gummy worm tied to string, who knew :) well Veva did since she's done this many times with Craig's family.
Millie & Lincoln were all ready to go with their fishing poles in the water...
The kids weren't quite getting the job done so the dads took over, haha. But even I screamed when that string came flying in the air with a crawfish stuck to it, so crazy.
Lincoln & Kenedee showing dad's first catch of the day, they were loving it!
Craig got brave on us and started playing with his crawfish, sick!
Craig then decided to test out its craw-strength by attaching it to his shorts. I told him to try it on his lip and he didn't think that was too good of an idea :) Those things have some killer claw strength!
3 catches for Adam & 3 for Craig. Kenedee & Millie were so proud showing em off. We headed back to the cabin to cook em up and eat a real lunch for the rest of us :)
They're quite nasty, brown in color, and huge live in the bags but they once they're cooked, they turn red and shrink in size. Kind of sick looking if you ask me. When we lived in Puerto Rico, Adam ordered a plate of about 30 crawfish at a restaurant and I about died watching him eat all of them. He was excited to try em out again...
Cracking em open to get the meat out...
There is surprisingly very little meat to these creatures. Lincoln told me they tasted like crab and thought they were delicious, so like his dad. Adam, Lincoln, Craig, & Millie were the brave souls to down the crawfish.
After lunch we were able to get ALL FIVE KIDS NAPPING at the SAME TIME! Talk about heavenly! So we escaped outside for some rounds of Frisbee Golf. There are 9 holes set up around their property with nice wooden signs nailed to different trees. It was pretty sweet and got a little competitive playing with four very competitive people, haha. Ahlstroms vs Barlows and sadly we lost by 2 or 3 both games!!! We chalked it up to their knowledge of the course and us never playing before but really, they were good :) Veva had thrown the frisbee and it got caught in this cluster of trees which made for some good times watching Craig throw it out of there...
After our games of Frisbee Golf, Veva taught me some powertap moves while we waited for all of the sleeping kiddos to wake up. My brain was in choreography overload and my body was heating up, but it was a lot of fun. Still makes me laugh cause I joked with her to put me in last year (on her competition team when a girl got hurt) but I've never done it before. And now I can, haha, not really. But good times indeed!!!
Adam and I had never been 4-wheeling, atving, or anything of the sorts. Adam was loving his mountain riding!
That afternoon we shot around on the bball court. Adam & Veva then got into a bball battle with a game of 'Around the World'...
Veva, who played ball for UVU and still has some mad skills, tore it up against Adam :)
Lincoln couldn't get enough of the slingshot and was quite good actually. He kept asking if we could go buy him one when we got home, maybe some day :)
After dinner, we came back to roast up some SMORES!
Chowing down...
And loving life!
The kids then escaped in the trees to go build their own pretend fire, too funny.
Thanks Ahlstroms for one FABULOUS weekend. It was a much needed getaway to cooler weather!!!
